About Green Gene

Green Gene—often called GG—has been a devoted student of nature since childhood, long before earning a badge as a Scout Nature Instructor. Early dreams of becoming an ornithologist evolved into a broader realization: our gardens and landscapes play a critical role in supporting birds, insects, soil, food systems, and human well-being.

Rather than using the narrow term gardener, Gene describes himself as a professional nature lover. Every choice we make—what we plant, cut, discard, or preserve—affects life somewhere in the garden of the planet.

Gene’s work embraces what he calls Eco‑Logical Economics: solutions that reduce maintenance while increasing usability and ecological benefit. His guiding principles include:

  • Leave the leaves
  • Grow food & nature
  • Prune thoughtfully instead of shearing or hacking
  • Replace lawns with meadows, rock gardens, or living systems
  • Compost and mulch instead of exporting waste

You won’t find an obsession with straight lines, loud machinery, or constant mowing here—though Gene understands that there is a time and place for formality. His preference is quieter, more observant, and ultimately more productive.

Based in Laguna Beach, Gene has spent decades landscaping, gardening, beekeeping, teaching, and writing for various publications. While he prefers hands‑on work and storytelling to social media, he believes meaningful change happens when more people are involved.

Today, Gene prioritizes consulting, alongside writing and teaching. He works primarily in South Orange County and the Thousand Oaks area, with select project management, caretaking, or house‑sitting opportunities considered when they support land stewardship.
